1.4 HDI/TDCi Peugeot, Citroën French diesel engine reliabili

PSA/Ford DLD-414 1.4 liter turbodiesel PSA/Ford DLD-414 is similar to the power unit 1.6 HDI / TDCi. But there are some differences. For example, the engine has its own block and piston group: cylinder diameter is 73.7 mm and piston stroke is 82 mm. The power unit has an aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners. Most versions of the 1.4-liter motor are produced with an eight-valve cylinder head.

The cars Citroen C3 and Suzuki Liana use a special version of the motor – with a sixteen-valve cylinder head. This engine develops ninety hp, received a fuel system Denso DCR400, turbine IHI VVP2 with intercooler and variable geometry.

Power of motors 1.4 HDI / TDCi in average 68-75 horsepower, they are equipped with a simple turbine BorgWarner (KKK) KP35, there is no intercooler. The subcompact cars Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 were equipped with de-fortified versions of the power unit with an output of 54 horsepower.

Is the 1.4 HDI / TDCI engine reliable?

The powertrain is reliable, primarily due to the lack of technical sophistication. The engine passes without major repairs for more than 300 thousand kilometers.

When do I need to change the crankshaft damper pulley?

The motor does not have a dual-mass flywheel, and the crankshaft pulley is a damper pulley. But it is unreliable, because of which it has to be replaced when the rubber damper breaks.

Fuel Filter Features

In the motor 1.4 TDCI / HDI every 10 thousand kilometers it is necessary to drain the condensate in the fuel filter. For this purpose, a special drainage hole is provided.

When changing the filter, it is important not to forget to fill it with diesel fuel. In the Bosch fuel system with a pumping pump, this is easily done.

Is the turbine reliable?

Most of the 1.4 HDI / TDCI motors received a BorgWarner (KKK) turbocharger model KP35: this turbine is similar to the turbine on the 1.5 dCi Renault-Nissan motor. The boost pressure is 0.5-1 bar. The turbine is notable for its reliability, its replacement is sometimes required after a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers.

Pros and cons of the EGR system

The first versions of the power unit received a vacuum drive. Other versions, adapted to Euro-4, received an EGR system with an electrically actuated valve.

In this powertrain, recirculation operates at antifreeze temperatures of five degrees or more and at more than 3,000 crankshaft revolutions per minute. Recirculation stops if the engine is idling for five minutes.

Errors associated with the EGR valve occur when it is not in the correct position or is unable to “train”. The reason is wedging due to dirt on the valve or breakage of the electric motor.

Immediately there are difficulties with mixture formation: excessive recirculated gases lead to the formation of too poor oxygen mixture. This becomes the cause of smoky exhaust and a drop in engine power.

What you need to know about the ECG valve?

The diaphragm of the crankcase gas ventilation system valve is installed in a plastic valve cover. The engine signals that it has failed: gases with oil get into the intake tract, the motor begins to “eat” oil. Although the oil does not burn, it settles and slowly eats away the intake pipes.

To solve this malfunction, drivers change the entire valve cover assembly, because this valve is part of it.

How often do you need to change the timing belt?

Its replacement is required after 180-240 thousand kilometers of mileage or once every ten years. You can replace it yourself, there are no difficulties with this. But it is not allowed to break the belt: otherwise, the valves collide with the pistons.

When do I need to change the washers under the injectors?

Washers under the nozzles eventually burn out, you have to change them. That the refractory washers have burned out, will be signaled by the smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin. Also, there will be pishy sounds during the operation of the power unit.

Fuel system features of the 1.4 TDCI / HDI engine

The engine uses different fuel systems – Bosch and Siemens. If the motor is a Bosch system, then a rubber “pear” of fuel pumping is installed. In case of Siemens SID 802 and 804 fuel injectors, there is no “pear”: the design is such that the priming pump is integrated into the fuel injector.

Malfunctions of the Siemens fuel system can occur due to a choke when driving with a low level of fuel in the tank or with incorrect replacement of the fuel filter. The boost will not fail completely, but the low fuel pressure control valve will need to be replaced. If such problems do not occur, that the Siemens fuel injector will work for about 300 thousand kilometers even when driving on cheap diesel fuel. Siemens injectors are piezoelectric, it is difficult to repair them, besides, you will have to contact a qualified specialist.

What good is the Boosh EDC16 fuel injector?

The fuel injector is characterized by reliable injectors and is rarely blown out. You will have to replace the valve that regulates fuel pressure: over time, it gets clogged if you use cheap filters.

The older the engine, the higher the probability of plastic fuel hoses getting frayed, which causes air infiltration and serious problems in diesel operation.
