Mercedes M272 E25 2.5 engine design and repair

Mercedes-Benz M272 KE25 2.5 engine

The youngest version in the M272 family (which also includes the M272 E30 and M272 E35), with a working volume of 2.5 liters, was released in 2005 and was intended to replace the last M112 E26. The engine cylinder block is the same as the M272 E30, but uses a crankshaft with a reduced piston stroke of 68.4 mm (it was 82.1 mm). Cylinder heads are similar to M272 E30: aluminum, with two camshafts (DOHC), 4 valves per cylinder, diameter of intake valves 37 mm, exhaust valves 28 mm. The technology of infinitely variable timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts, hydrocompensators, dual-mode intake manifold with adjustable length.

The timing drive is chain, chain life is about 150 thousand kilometers. Control system Bosch ME 9.7.
The engine was designed for Mercedes models with index 230 and 250.

The power unit was produced until 2011, after which it was replaced by a turbocharged two-liter four M274 DE 20.

Modifications of engines M 272 E 25

  1. M272.911 (2007 – 2009) – version with an output of 204 hp at 6200 rpm, torque 245 Nm at 2900 rpm. It was installed on Mercedes-Benz C 230 4Matic W204.
  2. M272.920 (2005 – 2011) – analog of M272.911 for Mercedes-Benz C 230 W203, CLC 230/250 CL203.
  3. M272.921 (2007 – 2009) – analog of M272.911 for Mercedes-Benz C 230 W204.
  4. M272.922 (2007 – 2009) – analog M 272.911 for Mercedes-Benz E 230 W211.

Problems and disadvantages of Mercedes M272 2.5 engines

  • The weakest point of this power unit is its timing mechanism.
  • Because of the rapid wear of the balancer shaft sprockets, the entire timing mechanism becomes unusable.
  • Another known problem is jamming of the exhaust manifold flaps.
  • Plastic cylinder head plugs ooze oil at 50-70 thousand kilometers.
  • Overheating of the engine leads to detonation and destruction of the aluminized coating in the cylinders.
