Nissan YD22 engine

Characteristics of the YD22DDDTi engine

The YD22DDDTi engine, produced at the Yokohama plant from 1999 to 2007, is one of the popular diesel engines developed by Nissan. This engine, characterized by reliability and durability, has found wide application in various Nissan car models such as Almera, Primera, X-Trail, AD, Almera Tino, Expert and Sunny.

Design and Configuration

The YD22DDDTi is an inline four-cylinder diesel engine with a cast iron cylinder block, which gives it high strength and load resistance. Each cylinder is equipped with four valves, which improves air intake and exhaust, enhancing overall engine efficiency. The piston stroke is 94 mm and the cylinder diameter is 86 mm. The engine has a compression ratio of 16.7 or 18.0 to achieve optimal power and torque characteristics.

Performance

The YD22DDDTi engine was available in several power options, depending on the specific modification:

  • 77 horsepower at 4,000 rpm
  • 110 horsepower at 4,000 rpm
  • 114 horsepower at 4,000 rpm
  • 126 horsepower at 4,000 rpm
  • 136 horsepower at 4000 rpm

Torque also varied by engine version:

  1. 160 Nm at 2000 rpm
  2. 237 Nm at 2000 rpm
  3. 247 Nm at 2000 rpm
  4. 280 Nm at 2000 rpm
  5. 300 Nm at 2000 rpm
  6. 314 Nm at 2000 rpm

Turbochargers

To improve performance, the YD22DDDTi engine utilizes Garrett turbochargers including the GT1549S, GT1749V and GT1849V models. These turbochargers help increase horsepower and torque while providing fuel economy.

Environmental standards and fuel consumption

The YD22DDTi engine meets Euro 3 and Euro 4 environmental standards, making it environmentally friendly and compliant with modern emissions regulations. In city driving conditions, fuel consumption for Nissan X-Trail is about 9.0 liters per 100 km, on the highway – 6.2 liters per 100 km, and in the mixed cycle – about 7.2 liters per 100 km.

Oil and maintenance

To ensure long and reliable engine operation, it is recommended to use quality engine oil with different viscosities, including 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 15W-40, 15W-50, 20W-20, 20W-40 and 20W-50. The volume of oil in the engine is 5.2 liters, and 6.3 liters when completely changed. Oil change is recommended every 20,000 km, although it is better to do it every 10,000 km for maximum reliability.

Longevity and tuning

The factory resource of the YD22DDDTi engine is more than 300 thousand kilometers, although in practice this figure can exceed the stated data. The potential for tuning of this engine allows to increase its power, but there is no specific data on possible improvements without loss of resource.

Cars with this engine

The YD22DDDTi engine has been installed in various models of Nissan cars, including Almera, Primera, X-Trail, AD, Almera Tino, Expert and Sunny. These vehicles are known for their reliability and durability, making them popular among car enthusiasts.

Reliability, problems and repairs of the YD22 engine

The release of this engine was started in 1999 and the first cars with it were Nissan AD and Expert. This engine was developed on the basis of the related YD25 and was designed to replace the 2-liter diesel CD20. The YD22 cylinder block is lower than that of its 2.5-liter counterpart, it is cast from cast iron and has 4 cylinders, inside it there is a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 94 mm, connecting rods of 157.5 mm long, and cylinder diameter of 86 mm. All this makes it possible to get a working volume of 2184 cubes or 2.2 liters.

Covered the cast-iron block with an aluminum head, which has 2 camshafts and 16 valves. The intake valves are 28mm in diameter, the exhaust valves are slightly smaller at 26mm and the valve stem is 6mm thick.

Adjustment of the valves on the YD22 is recommended if they are noisy. Valve clearances on a cold engine are as follows: intake 0.24-0.32 mm, exhaust 0.26-0.34 mm. On a hot engine: intake 0.274-0.386, exhaust 0.308-0.432 mm.

The camshafts are rotated by a double-row chain. Practice shows that the replacement of the timing chain is necessary, approximately after 200-250 thousand kilometers, the original chain can go even more.

Nissan YD22 engine

The simplest version of Nissan YD22DD diesel engine is not equipped with turbocharger, has direct injection and very modest figures: 77 hp at 4000 rpm and 160 Nm at 2000 rpm. Such motors are on Nissan Sunny, AD and Expert.

YD22DDT engines on Almera and Almera Tino are equipped with a turbine Garrett GT1549S, have direct injection and develop 110 hp at 4000 rpm. Bosch VP44 fuel injector is used here. Such cars are distinguished by the letter designation DI.

On X-Trail there is a motor with a turbine Garrett GT1749V and it develops 136 hp at 4000 rpm, and its torque is 300 Nm at 2000 rpm.

In 2002, the 110 hp unit was replaced by the YD22DDTi engine with a Garrett GT1549S turbo, intercooler, compression ratio of 16.7 instead of 18, with Denso Common rail injection system and HP2 pump.

Cars with this engine have the designation dCi. Output of such engines increased to 114 hp at 4000 rpm, torque 247 Nm at 2000 rpm.

In 2003, an HP3 pump with increased injection pressure, new injectors, Garrett GT1849V turbine were installed. Power of such YD22DDDTi increased to 139 hp at 4000 rpm, torque 300 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Like most modern engines, the YD22 is equipped with EGR system.

In 2007, the YD22DDDTi was discontinued, but is replaced by the YD25.

Problems and disadvantages of Nissan YD22 diesel engines

This motor is quite reliable and does not have any inherent disadvantages. The only significant disadvantage is age, because of it this engine can give you any surprise. And otherwise, the injectors live more than 150 thousand kilometers, the turbine serves about 250 thousand kilometers and more. Also, you should periodically clean the EGR valve, pour normal oil and good fuel, regularly maintain your engine and it will serve you for a long time and without any problems. The resource of YD22DDDTi can exceed 300 thousand kilometers.

YD22DDTi engine tuning

Chip tuning

To increase the power of diesel engine YD22, you do not need to invent anything, you just need to find an office engaged in chip tuning and flash your control unit. Such a firmware gives a good boost: 165-170 hp and up to 370 Nm of torque, with the original motor of 136-139 hp.
Low-power YD22DDT one firmware can be rocked to 135-140 hp and add 45-50 Nm of torque.
