The A14NET/NEL engine has been produced at the Opel werk aspern plant from 2010 to the present. This inline four-cylinder unit has a cast iron cylinder block and an injection system. Each cylinder is equipped with four valves. The piston stroke is 82.6 mm and the cylinder diameter is 72.5 mm. The compression ratio of the engine is 9.5.
The engine displacement is 1,364 cubic centimeters. Engine output ranges from 143 horsepower at 4,900-6,000 rpm to 120 horsepower (for the A14NEL). Torque ranges from 200 Nm at 1850-4900 rpm to 175 Nm at 1850-4200 rpm (for A14NEL).
The engine is recommended to use fuel with an octane rating of 95. It also meets the Euro 5 environmental standards. Fuel consumption for Opel Astra 1.4 is 8.1 liters per 100 km in the city, 5.2 liters per 100 km on the highway and 6.2 liters per 100 km in mixed mode. Oil consumption is up to 0.6 liters per 1000 km.
The recommended oil for the A14NET/NEL engine is 5W-30 and its capacity is 4 liters. When changing the oil, it is recommended to pour about 3.5 liters. Oil change is carried out once every 15000 km.
According to the factory, the engine resource for Opel Astra/Cruze 1.4 turbo is 350 thousand kilometers (unofficially), but there is no information about the resource in practice.
Regarding tuning, the potential to increase engine power to 180-190 horsepower is indicated, but there is no information about the possibility to do this without loss of resource.
Faults and repair of the engine A14NET/NEL
The A14NET engine debuted in 2010 on the Astra J and other GM vehicles, and its feature is the use of turbocharging on a small engine displacement. One of the advantages of this engine is the use of timing chains, which significantly increases the reliability of the mechanism. It also uses hydrocompensators, which eliminates the need to adjust the valves, and the operating temperature of the Opel Astra 1.4 Turbo engine is 90 °C. In addition, a variable valve timing system with phase shifters on both shafts is used. However, of particular note is the turbine installed on the A14NET engine, which is small, but provides a boost pressure of 0.5 bar already from low speeds, providing smooth and stable torque.
All these features combine to produce 140 hp at 1.4 liters, which provides economy and good traction, representing significant advantages.
Disadvantages
But not everything is so sweet, from these pluses arise and minuses, because of the high output from a liter of volume, the motor is seriously loaded and very demanding to the quality of oil, pour only quality official oil, and not that habitual your badyaga, otherwise the motor will say hello. If you intend to drive long and happy, you should do it carefully and without unnecessary rigidity, not loading the motor in vain, so that your turbine did not fall apart and pistons did not fall apart to hell.
- Let’s look at the shortcomings of the motor, there is a typical problem of Opel engines, after some time through the valve cover gasket will begin to leak oil and it does not matter what your mileage, new car or old, it is a common disease requiring replacement of the gasket.
- Ekotek 1.4 turbo engines like to make sounds reminiscent of the diesel engine, this is a classic Opel engines with phasoregulators.
- The pump on the engine A14NET often whistles, so if there is a strange characteristic sound of the engine, go to the service, replacement will cost you not expensive.
- Besides this, the bearing of the air conditioner compressor likes to make scraping sounds, this is a very popular disease and 90% of owners can not even understand what is happening.
- Besides all these joys, there are also clicking sounds… Astra motor in general likes to make various sounds, so that you do not get bored, so the clicking sound is made by the injectors, it is normal, it is part of their work.
- The vibration is also known to everyone, the motor likes to vibrate a little, there is nothing fatal in it, the disease of all turbo Opel.
In general, the motor is good, modern, economical, with a number of systems and technologies, for a quiet ride with occasional acceleration is what you need. But for racing is not suitable, for some racing look towards A16XHT, A16LET or other more powerful variants.
Since 2012, a simplified model of this motor called A14NEL, deformed up to 120 hp. All the problems inherent in the 140 strong model are repeated on it.
Tuning engine Opel A14NET/NEL
Chip tuning Astra/Cruze 1.4 turbo
Unlike the atmospherics, where chip tuning is a very dubious occupation, here the situation is different and to flash the engine A14NET makes sense. There is a lot of offices with ready programs for your motor, together with this removes the catalytic converter and the power rises to 160-180 hp. To do something more, to make more productive turbines, is unprofitable and not reasonable, for 1.4 liter 180 hp and so very serious indicator.
